Lowest prices in town

To students no longer on a meal plan, the sight of the first grocery bill may be hard to stomach.

While many of the stores claim to have the best prices, only one can truly have the lowest. As of Sept. 26, Woodman’s offered the cheapest box of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Original and 11.5 oz box of Lucky Charms.

Walmart offered the cheapest can of Campbell’s Tomato Soup and 10oz bag of Lays Classic. For a gallon of 2 percent milk, Kwik Trip offered the lowest price. Aldi offered the cheapest prices for a gallon of skim milk, a dozen eggs and a pound of ground beef.

Aldi also offered the lowest prices for off-brand macaroni and cheese, tomato soup, marshmallow cereal and classic potato chips.

For customers over 21, Woodman’s offered overall the lowest prices for select beer, hard liquor and wine coolers. Price comparisons were completed looking at a six pack of Redd’s Apple Ale, a 30 pack of Keystone, a 12 pack of Miller and Bud Lite bottles, a one Liter bottle of Smirnoff Triple Distilled, a six and 12 pack of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, a one Liter bottle of Captain Morgan and a six pack of Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest.

From the Student Union, Walgreens is 0.4 miles, Kwik Trip is 0.5 miles, the People’s Food Co-Op is 0.6 miles, the Festival on State Rd. is 1.7 miles, the La Crosse Walmart is 3.4 miles, the Onalaska Festival is 6.2 miles, Woodman’s is 7.3 miles, Aldi is 7.3 miles and the Onalaska Walmart is 7.5 miles.

According to Woodman’s company website, “While large nationwide super stores carry clothing, housewares, and food products, Woodman’s is solely focused on providing the widest variety of grocery items at the best prices.”

The employee owned store is open 24 hours and is located at 9515 Wisconsin 16, Onalaska near Walmart.

Walmart advertises “We save people money so they can live better” as posted on the corporate website.  Walmart offers a full service retail and grocery store with two locations near campus. 4622 Mormon Coulee Rd, La Crosse and 3107 Market Pl., Onalaska.

Aldi is a discount shopping store offering mostly off-brand products with “Impressively high quality at impossibly low prices” as stated on the company website.

If shopping at Aldi remember to bring grocery bags (or purchase bags at the counter), a quarter for a shopping cart deposit, and cash or a debit card as credit cards and checks are not accepted. Aldi is located at 3133 Market Pl, Onalaska near Walmart.

According to the company website, Festival’s mission is to provide “customers with a clean store, friendly people, quality products and an enjoyable shopping experience for ‘not a lotta money.’”

Festival Foods offers a large variety  of groceries at three locations near campus, 2500 State Rd, La Crosse in the Village Shopping Center, 30 Copeland Avenue, La Crosse, 1260 and Crossing Meadows Drive, Onalaska,

Kwik Trip and Walgreens offer a small selection of convenience foods and groceries. Walgreens is nearest to campus, at 900 West Avenue, La Crosse. Kwik Trip has ten locations in La Crosse, one being 506 Cass St., La Crosse.

The People’s Food Co-Op offers a selection of local wine and beer making price comparison difficult when few other establishments offer the brand. Nearest location to campus is at 315 5th Avenue South, La Crosse.

Both Festival and Woodman’s have separate entrances for the large selection and a variety of alcoholic beverages while other stores offer a smaller in-store selection.

Aldi has a small display of off-brand wine and beer fitting with the company goal of providing the lowest cost items to consumers.
