On August 18 William J. Medland passed away in his home. Former president and chancellor of Viterbo University, Medland lost his battle with cancer.

Medland was the longest serving   president in Viterbo history. He was president from 1991-2006. Current Viterbo President, Richard Artman, was his successor.

As president, Medland brought on changes to campus which include the Amie L. Mathy Center for Recreation and Education, the D.B. and Marge Reinhart Center for Ethics, Science, and Technology, Rose Terrace, and the Outdoor Athletics Complex.

After being president, Medland became chancellor until he retired in 2008.
