What happened to Baby Jesus?

On Dec. 15, VU Today sent out a school-wide email announcing “The baby Jesus is missing from the Nativity Scene in Murphy Center.” David Pleasants, the director of campus safety and security, told Lumen that baby Jesus was returned to the manger around Christmas.

The culprit is still unknown, as is the motive behind this Christmastime kidnapping. Pleasants suspected that it was a practical joke, which he and the security guards usually handle with good humor.

Although no one was hurt and nothing was damaged, Pleasants said, “[The person] didn’t really help anybody and it really affected the Christmas spirit on campus. Some people were upset.”

After the announcement about the M.I.A. Jesus, staff and students alike speculated about who did it and why. The statuette was not returned during finals week, but a paper photo appeared in the manger to serve as a place-holder.

Although other news was occurring on and around campus, baby Jesus stole the limelight. “A couple drug dealers were taken off the streets and the person who was breaking into cars was caught,” Pleasants said. “But [the missing baby Jesus] was the talk of the town.”
