Bea Foley has made a habit of advancing to the NAIA national meet.  Last year, the whole team came with as Midwest Collegiate Conference champions.

The V-Hawks came agonizingly close to making a return trip this season.  Viterbo finished just two points behind conference nemesis Grand View University.  Seniors Foley and Kriston Siemianowski each placed in the top five to earn trips to the NAIA national meet in Fort Vancouver, Wash. on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Foley placed second for the third season in a row, covering the five kilometer course with a time of 19:15.  Grand View’s Obsie Birru has placed ahead of Foley in each of the past three conference championship meets, winning the meet in eighteen minutes flat.

Siemianowski finished third in a time in 19:40 to qualify for the national meet.  Senior Cindy Leuck also came within a second of qualifying with a time of 20:23.  Of that result, Leuck said, “Initially I felt extreme disappointment. It was the most heartbreaking day in my 10 seasons of cross country. Reflecting back on the loss now, it is easy to see through the disappointment and recognize all there is to be happy about and to be thankful for.”

Each of the runners expressed disappointment that the team came up short of a conference championship and qualifying for the national meet.  Siemianowski commented “Nationals won’t be the same without the whole team there again.”

“The conference race results were a disappointment for the team,” Foley said.  “The two-point gap between Grand View University and ourselves was frustrating. However, I also think the narrow margin has motivated our ladies to continue training hard for future success in both cross country and track.  Kriston and I are excited to compete and represent our Viterbo University family at nationals.”
