Editor’s Note: At press time, the V-Hawks were beginning tournament play. Scores were unavailable.

Winning streaks are a necessity for a team if it wants to make a run at a conference championship and beyond. Viterbo’s men’s soccer team is hoping its first winning streak since a 3-0 start to the season comes in the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament.

After that 3-0 start to the season, the V-Hawks went 5-7-3, alternating their victories with ties and defeats. Those wins, however, have come at the right times. The team placed fifth in the MCC during the regular season with a 4-3-1 record.

Senior Dennis Benthin believes that much of the inconsistency is due to injuries and suspensions, making it hard to get the team’s best 11 players on the field. Benthin himself has missed a portion of the season with an arm injury.

The team has played some of its best soccer against its toughest opponents. The V-Hawks pushed conference rival Grand View, ranked number nine nationally at the time, to overtime before losing by a 3-2 margin.

If the V-Hawks can get by Clarke, whom they defeated 5-2 in the regular season, they’ll have a shot at the one seed in the conference tournament, Mount Mercy. Benthin and the team’s six seniors hope that they’ll finally hit that winning streak they’ve been looking for all season.
