Campus Ministry offers new activities

Looking for a great way to meet new people, help others, and grow in faith? Viterbo’s campus ministries organization is bustling with many great weekly activities and weekend trips this semester.

Patrick Andera, Viterbo’s campus minster, is in charge of many of the events that take place throughout the year.

Every week students and faculty can participate in Scripture and Supper, Theology of the Body Study, Taize worship, Sunday mass, and choir practice.

Scripture and Supper occurs on Monday nights at 6 p.m., in the San Damiano Chapel. Students and Father Conrad Targonski lead the hour-long service, which includes readings and discussions from the upcoming Sunday. Free food is also served, so students don’t have to miss out on a meal to go to the service.

Theology of the Body Study is a new weekly event, led by Father Conrad. The program is inspired by a series of lectures given by Pope John Paul II in the late 1970s and early 80s. The lectures were about human love, and God’s plan for men and women. Father Conrad leads the study every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

After the Body Study discussion, Taize worship is held every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. Taize is a unique half-hour long worship service held in the back of San Damiano Chapel. Students gather in a relaxed, candlelit environment and sing songs with acoustic guitar, listen to a couple short bible readings, and pray together. This service allows students to meditate on the day, support fellow friends and students, and just unwind.

Every Sunday, San Damiano Chapel also hosts mass at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and choir practice at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The choir is always looking for new members. Students interested in participating, are welcome to attend any of the Sunday practices.

This year Father Conrad is also starting something called the Pier Giorgio Frassiti Fellowship. This fellowship unites the great outdoors with spirituality. Freshmen were invited to attend a hiking retreat on Sept. 28 and 29 where they were able to relax, pray, and enjoy social time. More events like this will be coming up this year through Father Conrad’s Frassiti Fellowship program.

Also coming up this semester is the Campus Ministry’s “Make a Difference Day Trip.” From Friday, Nov. 4 to Sunday, Nov. 6, Andera and Father Conrad will lead a group of students to Milwaukee for a weekend of fellowship, bonding, and service. Saturday, Nov. 5 will be devoted to raking yards, removing invasive plant species, and other fall clean-up work, while Friday and Sunday will involve team building activities and Church. Look for registration forms in the Campus Ministries office, Murphy Center room 340, to sign up.

Andera also would like to let students know that they are welcome to stop in his and Father Conrad’s office at any time. “We are always here to talk to students, and we are open to ideas for campus ministries,” Andera told Lumen.
