High expectations surround the Viterbo women’s cross country team, the team is facing some stiff competition early on during the regular season.

Coming off an appearance in the NAIA national meet last fall, the V-Hawks are looking to take the next step onto the national stage. On Sept. 16, the team placed 18th of 33 teams at the 33rd Annual National Catholic Cross Country Invitational, which was held at the University of Notre Dame and featured several Division I teams.

“The National Catholic Meet is a great opportunity to race with good competition from other divisions around the nation,” said senior Bea Foley, who placed 24th and is a returning All-American. “It is a very large meet and allows us to practice racing side-by-side competition the whole way. We learned the importance of not being content with position at the Notre Dame meet; it is imperative to maintain a competitive mindset throughout the race.”

Fellow seniors Emma McCarthy and Cindy Leuck shared their high expectations.

“Concerning the team’s goals, we are shooting to win our conference and qualify for nationals again this year,” McCarthy said. “I would say we are on track to meet these goals as we won our first meet and raced well at the Catholic School Invite hosted by Notre Dame.”

Leuck agreed. “I would say we are on track [with our goals]. We’ve done well at the first couple of meets. Really, we would love to place first at conference again and then place higher at nationals than we did last year. I think that is our basic goal. After last season, our expectations could really only go up.”

Foley also wanted to point out that, although the team’s roster is senior-dominated, the freshmen have contributed with the best practice attendance record on the team, determined attitudes, and joyful smiles.

The majority of this group will likely get to compete together in the spring as well, as part of the track team.

The Viterbo cross country team will compete at Pettibone Park on Saturday, Oct. 15.
