Rec Sports changes

The Recreational Sports Department in the Mathy Center has made some noteworthy changes for the new academic year.

For students looking to fit in a longer workout before their 8 a.m. class, the Mathy Center has expanded its hours. The building will now open up at 6 a.m. on weekdays, with the closing time to remain at 11 p.m. Hours will also be extended over breaks in the academic schedule.

Group Fitness cycling classes will again be offered at the YMCA this school year. The morning classes will stay the same, but afternoon classes will now also be available through Viterbo Group Fitness this year. Tuesday and Thursday morning classes will be held from 6:15-7 a.m. Afternoon classes will run from 4:30-5:15 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Both will be held at the La Crosse YMCA.

For those individuals interested in participating in intramural sports, there are a couple of new twists. First of all, Viterbo Recreational Sports will set up numerous stations around campus at designated times to assist with individual and team registration, along with collecting forfeit deposits. Students are, of course, still able to register on their own as well. The captain’s meeting at the commencement of each season has also been replaced by a captain’s quiz held online at http://www.imleagues.com to ensure that teams have knowledge of the league rules.

Finally, the Mathy Center has added a new type of membership program. In the “Plus One” program, a Mathy Center member is able to register their spouse or partner as a member. The “Plus One” member has full Mathy Center access and can participate in Group Fitness classes and intramural programs.

The only exception is that the Fitness Center is off-limits to Plus One members between 2 and 5 p.m. to ensure that students are able to comfortably access the weight room during the peak hours of use. The cost is fifty dollars per semester, and proof of shared residency must be provided.
